Brunch double feature – Part 2 – Commerce

October 11th, 2009

Commerce is a restaurant that opened earlier this year in a beautiful spot in the West Village. It’s in that great part of the Village where the cobbled streets make no sense at all, turning in seemingly random directions at whim. When you walk down Commerce Street to Commerce, the restaurant appears right after the street curves in what is basically a 90 degree turn. This sets up the restaurant to deliver something unique and unexpected, which is exactly what I found over brunch there a few weeks ago.

Brunch double feature – Part 1 – Max Brenner

October 10th, 2009

There is something special about weekend brunch in New York.  The top brunch spots, places like Prune and Little Owl, are perennially packed with eager eaters.  This past summer saw the advent of the somewhat disgusting “super” brunch at places like the now-closed Merkato 55, which aimed to replicate a Meatpacking night out over the noble meal of brunch.

Restaurant Review - Bouley

May 24th, 2009

My mother had choice of restaurants for Mother’s Day a few weeks back. She chose one of my and her favorite restaurants: Bouley. We have traditionally gone for special occasions about once a year and had not been since they moved locations this past year. I was very excited to see the new location, give my Mom a great dinner for Mother’s Day and enjoy Bouley’s great food. Bouely really is one of my favorite restaurants so if I get carried away in this review, forgive me.

Wine Recession Special - Cheap Sauvignon Blanc

May 18th, 2009

M and I found ourselves rather low on wine the other week so we decided to put in an order with Astor Wines. Although I prefer Chambers Street Wines when I’m trying to learn something new about wine, Astor is hard to beat for its vast selection of wines from around the world. This was right after the first nice day of spring, so we were both in the mood for some crisp white wines that would be well suited for weeknight consumption after getting home from work. For us, the wine that generally best meets those criteria is New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

Restaurant Review: BLT Market’s Roast Suckling Pig Special

May 15th, 2009

P and I recently went over to BLT Market for their Roast Suckling Pig special. On Thursday evenings through the end of May, the restaurant offers a $30 plate of suckling pig served with homemade sausage stuffing and creamed Swiss chard. Despite having a reservation during the height of New York’s swine flu scare, we decided the suckling pig was a calculated and fair risk to take for a good meal.

Restaurant Review: Maxie’s Grill

April 27th, 2009

This past Friday, we wanted an appropriate venue for to watch the first Yankees vs. Red Sox game of the season. Over a year ago, we went to Maxie’s Grill, the junior restaurant to Angelo & Maxie’s Steakhouse. The place has an extensive menu focused on items well suited to watching a baseball game – namely, burgers, wings, and other fried things. Although the clientele attracted to this restaurant (at least on the night we visited) seemed more interested in having chugging contests at their table than watching the game, the overall experience was still positive.

Restaurant Review - Halfsteak

April 20th, 2009

Tom Colicchio has gotten a lot of positive press for the restaurant deals he has started running in two of his New York restaurants. In his flagship Craft, he has started running “Frugal Fridays”, recently extended to the rest of the week as well. In Craftsteak, Colicchio’s West Side Highway ode to beef, he has started “Halfsteak” in the bar seating area. We went to Halfsteak recently, eager to try some of Colicchio’s wallet-friendly offerings. We left disappointed, to say the least.

Restaurant Review: Bobby Van’s Steakhouse - Recession Special

April 5th, 2009

If there is a silver lining to the current economic recession, it has to be all of the great deals that New York City restaurants are offering right now (eater.com has a great list here).  We will try to pick out the best deals from this list of recession specials and share them with you all.  First up is Bobby Van’s Steakhouse - Broad Street.

Restaurant Review: The Grand Sichuan, West Village

March 31st, 2009

We recently set out in search of traditional “white tablecloth” Chinese food for a weeknight dinner. However, we were not in search of the typical greasy, heavy Chinese food (read: General Tso’s Chicken, Beef with Broccoli, etc) which admittedly has its own important place in our lives. For this night, we wanted good, relatively traditional, and most importantly spicy Chinese food.

Restaurant Review: Tacos Matamoros, Sunset Park, Brooklyn

March 24th, 2009

It is safe to say that Mexican food is one our passions. We’ve already posted two recipes for Mexican-inspired dishes: the Caramelized Onion and Chicken Enchiladas and the Mexican Beef Pizza. It is fitting, therefore, that our first restaurant review post is for a Mexican place. Expect many more restaurant reviews in the future – but for now, Tacos Matamoros.

We have been searching for some good, cheap Mexican food since we moved to New York. Most places we tried fell into one (or two) of two categories: foolishly trendy for Mexican food (Dos Caminos), or promising yet unforgivingly bland (Cabrito). At our ideal Mexican place, which we thought existed only in our dreams (or the state of Texas) you could sit down in front a massive, almost diner-like menu and rattle off a bunch of appetizers and tacos and relax and stuff yourself for a few hours. While not a perfect place, Tacos Matmoros in Sunset Park, Brooklyn is the closest to this perfect vision that we have found in New York.
